The First Congregational Society

The First Congregational Society was formed in 1835, just two years after the settlement of Chagrin Falls by Noah Graves. The first members of the Church were Thomas and Rebecca West, Alexander and Polly Hart, Timothy and Sarah Osborne, Saloma Crosby, Andrew Dickinson and Thomas Hart. In 1844, the Trustees of the Congregational Society raised money to build a church house by selling “slips” or shares for which each slip holder received a deed to his interest in the property. The Society purchased land on East Orange Street from Aaron and Almeda Bliss for $200 and built their church house in 1845. The Congregational Church was located on the north side of the Chagrin River. When a resident who lived on the north side died, the church bell would toll a certain number of times to announce whether the recently departed was a man or a woman. The building no longer stands and it would have been where the parking lot is of the current Valley Lutheran Church.
