James A. Garfield and Chagrin Falls

James A. Garfield (1831–1881), the 20th President of the United States, had strong connections to Chagrin Falls and the surrounding community. Although Garfield was born in neighboring Orange Township, he spent considerable time in Chagrin Falls as a young man, working, studying, teaching, and developing the skills that would contribute to his remarkable career in public life.

Garfield’s Early Years in Chagrin Falls

Garfield was born in Orange Township in 1831 on property located along what is now SOM Center Road. As a young man, he became a frequent visitor to Chagrin Falls and at times lived in the village.

Before entering politics, Garfield worked as a carpenter and joiner in Chagrin Falls. During this period, he helped construct the Disciples of Christ Church on Walnut Street. His relationship with the congregation continued after his carpentry work was completed, and he later returned to the church as its minister.

Chagrin Falls also had a personal connection to Garfield’s future family life. Lucretia Rudolph, who would later become his wife, taught school in Chagrin Falls before the couple married.

Education and Lectures at Library Hall

Garfield continued his education while living and working in the area. He pursued a commercial course of study in Chagrin Falls and became a frequent lecturer at Library Hall, one of the important gathering places in the early village.

It is also believed that Garfield studied law with C. T. Blakeslee, a Chagrin Falls attorney. His time in the village therefore played an important role in the education and intellectual development of the future president.

The 1858 Genesis Debate in Chagrin Falls

One of the most notable events of Garfield’s early career took place in Chagrin Falls in 1858. Scientist William Denton challenged Garfield to a debate concerning the scientific accuracy of the Book of Genesis.

The debate lasted three days and was held at Library Hall. The event attracted considerable attention and helped bring Garfield a measure of public recognition. His ability as a speaker and debater would become an important asset during his later career in education and politics.

From Chagrin Falls to the Presidency

Garfield’s connection with Chagrin Falls came during the formative years of his life, before his rise to national prominence. He went on to serve in the Ohio Legislature, during the Civil War, and in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In 1880, James A. Garfield was elected the 20th President of the United States. His path from a young carpenter and student in the Chagrin Falls area to the presidency is an important part of the history of both Chagrin Falls and Orange Township, Ohio.
