Gurney Elementary School

The History of Gurney Elementary School in Chagrin Falls, Ohio

Gurney Elementary School played a significant role in the growth and development of the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District. Built during a period of rapid population growth, the school served generations of students and reflected the community’s commitment to providing quality education. Its history is closely tied to the post-World War II expansion of Chagrin Falls and the evolving needs of local families.

Growing Enrollment Creates a Need for a New School

For many years, the school buildings located on Philomethian Street adequately served the educational needs of Chagrin Falls students. As the village and surrounding township continued to grow, however, enrollment steadily increased.

The population boom that followed World War II placed significant pressure on existing school facilities. By the early 1950s, it became clear that additional classroom space was needed, particularly for elementary-age students. School officials began planning for a new campus that could accommodate the district’s growing enrollment.

The Lewis Sands Elementary school was built in 1957 to handle increased enrollment, but increased growth in population in Chagrin Falls and especially in South Russell outpaced the schools ability to handle enrollment.

Chagrin Falls Schools Expand

South Russell residents had been going to Chagrin Falls schools since 1926, but in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, South Russell’s population exploded with new housing developments.  A new school was needed to support that growth. Property was purchased in South Russell to build an elementary school on Bell Road.

Construction of Gurney Elementary School

Construction of the Gurney elementary school began in 1965. The building was named Gurney Elementary School in honor of Ted Gurney, a respected educator who served the Chagrin Falls school system as a teacher, coach and principal.

Gurney dedicated more than three decades of service to local education, retiring in 1966. His leadership and commitment to students left a lasting impact on the community, making him a fitting namesake for the new school.

The school was officially dedicated in 1966 and resulted in South Russell elementary students going to Gurney and Chagrin Falls elementary students going to Lewis Sands elementary.  They would all be reunited in the Philomethian school after elementary.

Closure of Gurney Elementary School

During the 1980’s, student enrollment declined to such a point that the Gurney Elementary school was closed for a few years.  By the late 1980’s, enrollment increased again and Gurney was reopened and continues to serve future generations of Chagrin Falls students.Gurney Elementary School’s Lasting Legacy

Since its construction in 1966, Gurney school has helped educate thousands of local children and supported the continued growth of the Chagrin Falls community.

Today, the legacy of Ted Gurney and the school that bore his name continues through the district’s tradition of educational excellence and its ongoing commitment to serving students and families throughout the Chagrin Valley.
