Artist D.P. Wilson

Renowned Portrait Artist of Chagrin Falls

David Philip Wilson (1909–1994) was a distinguished American portrait artist whose career was closely associated with Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Born in Pennsylvania, Wilson spent most of his artistic life in Chagrin Falls, where he and his wife, Binnie, lived in their beautiful home atop Grove Hill.

From the 1940s through the 1960s, Wilson became known as the “go-to” portrait painter for prominent individuals throughout Ohio and beyond. His work brought him commissions from governors, astronauts, and other notable public figures.

Portraits of Ohio Governors

Wilson’s reputation as a leading portrait painter led to a major commission from the Ohio History Center. He was selected to paint the official portraits of five Ohio governors:

  • Frank Lausche
  • John Brown
  • C. William O’Neill
  • Michael DiSalle
  • James Rhodes

These portraits represent an important part of Wilson’s artistic legacy and his connection to Ohio’s political and cultural history.

Portraits of Astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong

Wilson also received commissions to paint the official portraits of two of Ohio’s most celebrated astronauts, John Glenn and Neil Armstrong.

His portrait of John Glenn is displayed at the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio, preserving Wilson’s connection to two of Ohio’s most famous figures in the history of American space exploration.

Wilson’s portrait of President Lyndon B. Johnson is displayed in the Texas Statehouse, further demonstrating the national recognition his work received during his career.

David Philip Wilson and the Cleveland Institute of Art

In addition to his work as a professional portrait painter, Wilson was an influential art instructor. He taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he taught anatomy, still life, and hand construction three days a week.

His teaching reflected his strong understanding of the human figure and the technical skills required for portraiture. When he was not teaching or working on commissioned portraits, Wilson painted landscapes and seascapes for recreation.

Binnie Wilson: An Artist in Her Own Right

Wilson’s wife, Binnie, was also an accomplished artist. She designed wallpaper and fabric for a Chicago firm, pursuing her own creative career while sharing an artistic life with David.

Together, David and Binnie Wilson became part of the artistic community that helped make Chagrin Falls an important home for artists and creative professionals during the twentieth century.

David Philip Wilson’s Legacy in Chagrin Falls

David Philip Wilson’s career left a lasting mark on both Chagrin Falls history and Ohio’s artistic heritage. Through his portraits of governors, astronauts, and other prominent figures, his work documented an important period in Ohio and American history.

Although Wilson painted subjects throughout the country, Chagrin Falls remained his artistic home for much of his life. His career illustrates the important role that local artists and residents have played in the cultural history of the Chagrin Falls community.
