The Bible Christian Church was a Methodist denomination, founded in 1815 by William O’Bryan in Shebbear, Devonshire, England. Starting in 1836, a large number of families immigrated from Devonshire to the Chagrin Valley and in 1846, a congregation of Bible Christians was formed. They built a one-story church house on Front Street (now Bell Street) in 1851. They worshipped in that building until approximately 1873 when they built a fine building on the present site of The Federated Church at 76 Bell Street in a Georgian cross design. William “Boss” Hutchings, a member of the congregation, provided the bricks and was instrumental in the building of the structure. In 1884, the congregation voted to disband and join the Congregational Church which eventually became The Federated Church.
