The Chagrin Falls Soldiers’ Aid Society: Supporting Union Soldiers During the Civil War
Formation of the Chagrin Falls Soldiers’ Aid Society
As the Civil War intensified, residents of Chagrin Falls recognized the need to support local men serving in the Union Army. In response, the Soldiers’ Aid Society of Chagrin Falls was organized on September 3, 1861, at the “97 Chagrin Falls Hotel.”
The society was founded during a time of national crisis, when preserving the Union and supporting the war effort became a priority for many Northern communities. Members believed that every citizen had a responsibility to assist those serving on the front lines and to help preserve the nation during one of the most challenging periods in American history.
Providing Essential Supplies for Soldiers
The Soldiers’ Aid Society worked diligently to provide practical support for Union soldiers. Members organized community efforts to produce clothing, bandages, dried fruits, medical supplies, and other necessities needed by troops in the field.

Jane Church and many other women played a particularly important role in the organization, contributing countless hours sewing garments, preparing supplies, and coordinating relief efforts. The society also collected donations and letters from local residents to send to soldiers serving far from home.
Community Fundraising Efforts
Fundraising became a major focus of the organization. Chagrin Falls residents hosted public events, festivals, dinners, and entertainments to raise money for soldiers and veterans. These community gatherings not only generated financial support but also strengthened local unity during the war years.
The History of Evergreen Hill Cemetery
Establishing a Community Cemetery
During the Civil War, Chagrin Falls leaders recognized the need for a dedicated burial ground. In 1863, local resident Robert Barrows deeded several acres of land located just outside the village limits near Franklin Street for cemetery purposes.
This land became the foundation of what would eventually be known as Evergreen Hill Cemetery, one of the most significant historic cemeteries in Chagrin Falls.
Growth and Development of Evergreen Hill Cemetery
Additional acreage was added to the cemetery in 1873 through a donation from Albon B. Gardner. The cemetery continued to expand as the village grew, and in 1910 it officially received the name Evergreen Hill Cemetery through the efforts of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Chagrin Falls Improvement Association.
Today, Evergreen Hill Cemetery serves as the final resting place of many of the village’s early settlers, Civil War veterans, and prominent community leaders.
The Soldiers’ Monument and Memorial Day Traditions
Honoring Chagrin Falls Civil War Veterans
Following the Civil War, the Soldiers’ Aid Society remained active. Members turned their attention to honoring local soldiers who had served and sacrificed during the conflict.
Between 1865 and 1867, the society and its board of managers raised sufficient funds to commission and install a Soldiers’ Monument. The monument was financed through public subscriptions, community events, festivals, and donations from local residents.
Designed by J. Martin of Cleveland, Ohio, the monument became a lasting tribute to the men who served in the Union Army.

Memorial Day Celebrations in Chagrin Falls
The Soldiers’ Monument was dedicated in 1867 and quickly became the focal point of Chagrin Falls Memorial Day observances. For many years, annual ceremonies were held around the monument to honor veterans and remember those who gave their lives during the Civil War.
These commemorations helped establish a tradition of remembrance that continues to be an important part of Chagrin Falls history today.
Preserving Chagrin Falls Civil War History
The story of the Soldiers’ Aid Society, Evergreen Hill Cemetery, and the Soldiers’ Monument reflects the deep patriotism and civic spirit of Chagrin Falls residents during and after the Civil War. Their efforts to support soldiers, care for veterans, and preserve the memory of those who served remain an important chapter in the history of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
