Natural Resources Fueled the Mills
Chagrin Falls’ waterfalls and river drew early settlers—and soon became the power behind the area’s growth. The surrounding forests supplied timber, while the rushing water turned mill wheels and gave local industry its start.
By the mid-1800s, the sound of rushing water turning mill wheels was part of everyday life in Chagrin Falls. Mills lined the river, using its power to saw local timber, grind grain, spin wool, and make paper. The river & falls were more than a scenic landmark—they were the energy that helped build the village. Mills along the river included saw, grist, woolen & paper mills.
